The concept “Casting Show” is somewhat under pressure in Germany. The “Mother of all (German) Casting Shows”, DSDS is rapidly losing its audience as the general public are starting to realise that it is not about music at all but money. The main juror (and consequently the producer of the winner) Dieter Bohlen has been quoted as saying “I could get a kilogramme of mince meat into the charts” (a quote he repeated on the show last week). Its pure commerce from the start to the end (which is something that German producers are experts in – see Boney M. and Milli Vanilli producer Frank Farian). The winner will, as usual, be some young lad who has either had a hard life or is extremely attractive. He won’t be able to sing particularly well, but for the hordes of young girls he will be cute. Its no coincidence that only once has a female been able to win the competition since its inception in 2002.

But there is hope yet. The first season of “The Voice of Germany” has just ended. A completely new concept, where entrants are top class singers and have to audition and qualify to sing in front of a jury. The jury in the first season consisted of Nena (99 Red Balloons), Ray Garvey (Reamon), The BossHoss and Xavier Naidoo. In the first round the jury sits with their backs to the contestants, so they could concentrate fully on the music.

Todays choice is from the winner of the first series. A young (female) singer with a Ghanean background, who had just finished school. She visited a performing art school during her time at school, but apart from that she had little experience on stage. Todays lyrics are from her first single which reached to no. 2 in the German Charts, and proves that Casting Shows can produce top class singers …. here we go.

At last I get around to presenting a song, that I have wanted to do for a few months now. It was Sev that gave me the idea (he might just remember if his memory is any better than mine).

Todays band was a British five-piece pop group, that existed from 1969 to 1974. Over that period they had six Top 20 hit singles in the UK Singles Chart, and released five studio based albums. According to Allmusic: “they have been immortalised on a string of compilation albums, each recounting the string of effervescent hits that established them among Britain’s best-loved pop groups of the early 1970s”.

Februarys Mystery Lyrics Presentation was If (When You Go) by Judie Tzuke, based on the poem If by Rudyard Kipling. Judie leapt to fame at the end of the seventies with her hit “Stay With Me Till Dawn” which hit the UK Top Twenty and was recently voted into the top 50 Singles of all time by listeners in the UK.

This months choice however was a lot newer. It was originally released on the “Moonball On A Mirror” album in 2010 and is also featured on the live LP “October Road”

Welcome to Mystery Lyrics. Unfortunately I still have problems with the comment function on the new page, so we’re playing the old fashioned way again … I’m sure there will be no complaints.

I must admit that I’m not overly fond of French music. There’s something about the language that get’s my back up. In spite of this confession however, I’m going to present a French song this month…

Todays artist is a young woman who has taken the German, French and Belgian market by storm singing … JAZZ. Her husky voice is sometimes reminiscent of Edith Piaf, but her music is very much different.

Todays choice is by a legendary German Krautrock Band from Hannover who sold millions in the seventies, albeit mainly in their own country… Their debut album ‘Together’ is considered by fans to be one of the most iconic German Progressive Rock albums of all time. “Along with Udo Lindenberg and Kraftwerk they were the figureheads of German Rock Music. Powerful and levitating organ solos, brilliant guitar solos and the stamping beat of the drums made their sound in the seventies so popular nationally and internationally” (German Rock e.V.).

What goes around, comes around. And this month October has come around. I have just got back home after going to England for a few days to meet up with my cousins, some of which I haven’t seen for nearly 40 years! Usually after returning, I have a new artist in my luggage, but not this year I’m afraid, so let’s look back to a classic from the sixties!

In the category “I Can’t Believe we haven’t featured this before”, this song, produced by Jeff Barry, hit the number one spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart on December 31, 1966 and remained there for seven weeks, becoming the biggest-selling record for all of 1967. Because of 1,051,280 advance orders, it went gold within two days of release. It is one of the fewer than thirty all-time singles to have sold 10 million (or more) copies worldwide. It was also a number one hit in England, hitting the number one spot in January 1967

Time for our September round of online Mystery Lyrics. This time around we are going back to the 60s to present a band who’s South African organist was and indeed still is a household name (at least for our generations). He had a string of hits with his band on both sides of the Atlantic during his reign of about 7 years, but do you recognise todays choice?

Todays Mystery Artist (born 14 June 1956) is an Italian female singer-songwriter and pop musician. She may be best known for her 1986 song “Bello e Impossibile“.

Her first hit was in 1979 with the single “America“, which became a success in several European countries. The rise to fame in Italy started in 1984 with the release of her sixth album, Puzzle. This album peaked in the top 10 at the Italian, German, Austrian and Swiss hit-parades. She sang for the videoclip “Fotoromanza” (directed by Michelangelo Antonioni), won several musical awards and started a European tour, including a participation at the Montreux Jazz Festival. In 1986, her hit “Bello e Impossibile” was a huge success and brought her more awards in Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Her 1987 compilation Maschi e Altri sold over a million copies.

In 1990, she and Edoardo Bennato sang “Un’estate italiana“, the official song of the Football World Cup 1990. In September 2006, she recorded the CD single “Ama Credi E Vai” with Andrea Bocelli. Nannini was also featured on Einstürzende Neubauten member Alexander Hacke’s solo album Sanctuary, on the track “Per Sempre Butterfly“. In 2008 she duetted with the Italien rapper Fabri Fibra in his videoclip version of the song “In Italia“. She also sang the song “Aria” with the Macedonian singer Toše Proeski.

Todays Mystery Lyrics is the title track of the album, from which her first hit “America” is taken. Although it is in her native tongue (which I for one don’t understand), it is well worth listening to…

After a prolonged bout of mental derangement, which climaxed in forgetting my humble offering last month, here I am again with the lyrics for July .

Don’t forget that we have a new offering for The Hall of Fame this month. In July we are voting for songs by the Fab Four and the Rolling Stones. Difficult indeed just to choose five songs from each of these bands, so I decided to choose songs that are recognised by others as being the best 5. You may beg to differ of course, and if you do, we would love to read your views in the Mystery Lyrics Forum!

Todays offering is something of a belated birthday present for Sev, being it an (ahem) interpretation of a song by one of his favorite female singers (as presented by Hil last week)

But we also have a birthday in the house today!  So, without any further ado,

let’s wish Mrbkfind (Marv) a wonderful birthday
and a pot full of delicious West country Scrumpy to go with it! Happy birthday Marv!!!

Todays musicians are a British Scrumpy and Western band. The Somerset-based band is best known by many people for their 1976 number one hit (todays choice) and number three hit “I Am A Cider Drinker” based on the song Una Paloma Blanca, but have a history stretching over 40 years, and still perform to this day. Their particular “genre” of music was named Scrumpy and Western after the group’s first EP of the same name, issued early in 1967. Scrumpy is a name given to traditional Somerset cider, popular amongst the band and their fans, and frequently referred to in their songs.

Tis no wonder that this band has never been featured before …

Welcome to a new round of Mystery Lyrics with your Host Dave. Just a week now and we will be able to listen to the Mystery Lyrics Show 2010 on this page… The chatroom has been installed and we are ready to go! Don’t forget to sign up on the page if you wish to chat!

Over to the show and todays clue:

There’s been a lot of female soul singers coming out of Britain over the last few years. It started with Amy Whinehouse, followed by Joss Stone, Leona Lewis, Duffy, and Adele, just to name a few… (sort of reminiscent of the 60s with Dusty Springfield, Kiki Dee, Lulu, Cilla Black etc..) Todays choice is the latest of these singers, but she is (my opinion, of course) head and shoulders above the rest. When I first heard her, I was blown away. Her current LP is the most beautiful I have heard for many many years.

Elton John has said about todays artist, that she is going to be the worlds next superstar, and Burt Bacharach flew her in to the USA to record with her. (His “Alfie” is a bonus track on her album)

As far as I can make out (although my research might be faulty), she hasn’t made an impression on Billboard yet, but I surmise its only a matter of time.

Karen Carpenter reborn?

She has been compared by a lot of people to Karen Carpenter, and strangely, she is just about the same age now as Karen was when she passed away…

Today’s choice is her first single that got to no. 16 in the UK singles charts at the end of 2010.
