Welcome to another round of Mystery Lyrics with Dave. There are no birthdays or other known auspicious events in Lyricland today, allowing us to go on with the show.
Todays choice is from a 70s British TV series following the ups and downs of a female rock band that were trying to make it big time. The band consisted of three female singers (at times four) played by the delicious Rula Lenska, Julie Covington, who went on to bigger things with her later rendition of “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” (considered by many experts to be the best version of that song – you listening Madonna?) and Charlotte Cornwell. The series was awarded a BAFTA award in 1976.
The songs were written by Andy Mackay of Roxy Music fame and penned by Howard Schumann.
The series was in fact never repeated in the UK, but the memory is kept alive by a fan website and als a Facebook Group
Todays song is from the second series and is googlable. I also have it on the best authority that our very own Sev likes these songs, so time to see what you’ve been missing

What fun researching this one! I came up with, The Little Ladies singing “The Hype” in a series called Rock Follies of ’77, which was a followup to Rock Follies.

Lotta good reading there.

Glad you had fun Hil, even if you probably haven’t heard of the band or series… Wikipedia is always a mine of information … what would we do without it? Extra congratulations today for coming in first …wtg!!
Of course I did not know the group, but if all I ever encountered in Mystery Lyrics was stuff I already knew, I doubt I’d still be playing. Hearing new stuff or even old stuff that is new seems to be the essence of the game. It is for me, anyway. And beyond hearing, there is all the information. Where else would I have found out about Rula Lenska! Keep it coming, Dave.
rock follies everyone has something to sell. was it the little ladies????? with all due respects, madonna’s version of DCFMA was a hellhole. The benchmark remains Patti Lupone. however, the original west end evita, elaine page, is by no means chopped liver, and if you can possible find a recording of the song as done by Flo Lacey, that is indeed a treat.
It was indeed the Little Ladies Alan …. wtg!!
BTW they are not my words on Julie Covington (although I certainly popped the bit about Madonna in lol)
The fictional female rock band was the Little Ladies. The TV series was “Rock Follies of ’77”, sequel to “Rock Follies”. No luck on finding the lyrics.

Ah but that’s OK Phiz, it wasn’t the easiest of songs to find to start with. You came up with 805 of the goods, so thats good enough for me … wtg!!

I actually featured a song from Rock Follies back in 2001 “Glenn Miller Is Missing” listed as The Little Ladies Band 12/14/01. I just got finished a couple weeks ago watching Rock Follies & I am starting Rock Follies 77 (saw them on TV back in the 70s) and recently bought the DVD sets. I also own BOTH sets of the music on Vinyl & CD.

GREAT FREAKIN’ PICK MAN
The song of course is
The Hype
Everyone
Has something to sell
A film
A book
An album
Their politics
Religion
They’re all looking for a pigeon
To peddle visions to
Like everyone
We’re selling ourselves
We’ll greet
You from the posters
The badges
And the tee-shirts
Those flashy
‘look at me shirts’
Just must connect with you
With so many peddlers
All out on the street
We have to get our skates on
If we want to compete
So โฆ
We’ll say hello
To the people
Smile real pretty
At the camera lens
Talk kinds sweet
Into the microphone
We can’t do it
All alone
We need some friends
To give us The Hype
If you’re low
You’re high
If you’re high
You’re higher
With The Hype
We’re products
And we have to be launched
We’ll blast
You in
The papers
Assault you
On the telly
We’ll turn your
Head to jelly
Whatever else we do
No time for relaxing
For sleeping like logs
Too many other hustlers
Are out there Joe Bloggs
So โฆ
We’ll say hello
To the people
Smile real pretty
At the camera lens
Talk kinds sweet
Into the microphone
We can’t do it
All alone
We need some friends
To give us The Hype
If you’re bad
You’re good
If you’re good
You’re better
With The Hype
If you’re out
You’re in
You’re even inner
With The Hype
If you’re 3
You’re 2
If you’re 2
You’re the winner
With The Hype
Everyone’s got something to sell
Everyone’s got something to sell
Everyone’s got something to sell
Everyone’s got something to sell
So, it was you was it, lol…? I was wondering, couldn’t remember doing it myself.
The Rock Follies started on TV just after I came to Germany, and I remember it was on when I went home for christmas just a few weeks later ๐ I did manage to see quite a few episodes, and then again from the second series when I was home next time around. I really would like to watch it again (in its entirety this time) but 35 Euros for each series is a lot of money when you are not sure that it will live up to what I remember it to be. What do you think? Worth buying?
You are of course completely correct on all accounts, and thanks for the lyrics. WTG!!
Dave, after seeing it again in its entirety It didn’t seem as good as when I watched the series back in the day. but then again I got it very cheap on EBay so it didn’t bother me much. If you get it cheap by all means get it BUT if you spend top dollar / euro don’t bother….
One More Thing…..
who told you I like these, you surprised me with that statement : )
It sure is true LOL
Told me? Nobody told me …. I’m a genius, I thought you knew that ๐
Seriously though, if you go around posting comments on youtube, then you shouldn’t be surprised when you get found out ๐
LOL I should’ve known that I was found out on YouTube, I posted a ton of messages there in my days.
There’s nothing like telling people not to do something for them to do it… the following members answered per email via AOL. Folks, from the 19th of this month these mails won’t go through anymore as I quit AOL. Please note …. cheers ๐

Rock Follies – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
You got it right Peter, well done my friend
The song is The Hype from Rock Follies ’77, sung by the Little Ladies.
It is Cammie, well done
Just mentioning Rula Lenska was a flashback to the commercials she had for Alberto VO5, a shampoo. As I recall, no one had any clue who she was/is. Still have no clue but I had to stop by. Lynne/ FLMyst
Well, I’m sure you know more about Rula now… I found this interview btw where she mentions the shampoo commercial..
I, of course, know Rula Lenska from Rock Follies, but I remember a nationwide commercial in the United States – perhaps a hair shampoo? – that started off with you saying โIโm Rula Lenskaโ and made you a household name… the question is, how did this American commercial come about? Has have you had a chance to do much work (or spend time) in the United States other than that infamous commercial?
This commercial or rather series of commercials was for Alberto Culver……..I donโt quite know how it came about, but I have always had a lot of hair and since Rock Follies had a showing in the States I guess that is where it came from…. When the commercial became a cult, I came over amongst other things to do the Steve Allen show, and was asked to stay on in LA to meet producers and talk about further projects. At the time my little daughter was only 10 months old and I could not bear the prospect of being away from her for longer than a few days, and I could not afford to bring the whole family over โon specโ so to speak. Many promises were made and much was talked about but sadly nothing…. so far…. has come to fruition in the States…. I am still hoping.
From Rock Follies
“The Hype
Well done Amy, great answer, wtg!!
{{{{{{{{{{Dave}}}}}}}}}} all I could come up with is Rock Follies of 77 and the name Howard Schuman .
Rock Follies of ’77, was a comedy musical drama shown on British television in the mid 1970s. The storyline, over 12 episodes and two series, followed the ups and downs of a fictional female rock band called the “Little Ladies” as they struggled for recognition and success. The series starred Rula Lenska, Charlotte Cornwell and Julie Covington as the Little Ladies, with support from Emlyn Price, Beth Porter, Sue Jones-Davies, Stephen Moore and Little Nell among others. The series was made with a very low budget for Thames Television, with a style inspired by fringe theatre.
I’ll have to take halfsies since I ran out of time that I had to research this one
Ah Cheryl, but your answer is very well researched. Pity you didn’t get the title, but here you go lol… no halfsies today, so wtg!!!
